ChatGPT may have taken the world by storm, but Google is still fighting hard to retain its position at the top, as they are releasing a new tool named Project Magi. 

Project Magi makes searching on Google more personal, like a conversation, enabling users to receive more curated and specific results for their searches, which likely means that SEO’s focus will shift to content that directly answers the user’s questions with more personalized solutions, and less focused on things like having the right keywords.

What is Google Project Magi?

Simply put, Google’s newest AI-powered search engine is the replacement for Google’s existing current search engine to provide users with a more personalized and specific search experience.

That being said, there is still much to be learned about the new project, but here are some of the foreseen changes to search from Project Magi:


Google is trying to turn our search experience into something similar to a conversation. Think about how you use ChatGPT, and ask it questions to generate responses and content. Project Magi is set to operate similarly, allowing users to ask it questions and get specific answers. 

Neil Patel makes an interesting example by explaining it, like using an Alexa and how you might ask Alexa to “Turn off the lights” or “What the weather will be like tomorrow.” Project Magi will have these same abilities but at a much higher level being able to grow and learn to tailor answers more specific to your interests. For example, if it needs further information, it will ask questions and continuously adapt preferences to fit the user.


Project Mago is also set to include transactions within search, allowing users to perform actions like booking flights, buying daily items, and completing other financial transactions using the search engines. Therefore, transactions can be made using Google Pay, eliminating the need to leave the site to make a purchase.

When Will Project Magi Launch?

Google’s AI-powered search engine has remained somewhat elusive, with the company being relatively tight-lipped about all the platform’s plans, but they are definitely moving quickly. 

The Project is set to be launched in May 2023 to approximately a million users in the United States, with a plan to expand to 30 million by the end of the year.

One of the big takeaways is that creators will be even more relevant to SEO. Google showed that not only will they value experience and expertise, but they’ll surface creator-friendly video formats. There is a real creator SEO/video SEO opportunity ahead.

Does this mean that AI and Project Magi will kill off SEO? No, it will likely significantly impact how marketers approach online content, particularly those relying on organic traffic, but SEO will remain an essential part of content strategy. 

Here are a few of the possible implications that Project Magi may have on the future of SEO:

Need for Enhanced Personalization

The focus on personalization will only become more important, meaning marketers and writers must dial in on creating informative content that directly speaks to their target audience. Simply throwing in keywords may no longer be enough to keep ranking on the web.

Need for New Kinds of Optimization

Business owners and creators will likely need to create and optimize content to be easily understood by AI. With Project Magi, AI will play a prominent role in search, and it can be assumed that content which can be easily discovered using AI will more likely appear higher in the search results. For example, make it possible for content to be easily discovered through voice search.
